Further down the road is Edisto Island, which is a very quiet place, with little commerce and no traffic lights. There are a Serpentarium and a small museum with old farm instruments, a reconstructed plantation room and photos relating to the history of the region. Beaufort is the second oldest city in South Carolina, after Charleston. It is located in the center of Sea Islands, a chain of barrier and tidal islands, and has many historic attractions, such as John Mark Verdier House Museum and John Mark Verdier House. The museum is a Federal-style mansion that depicts early-1800s interior and exterior design and offers period history exhibits.
